Garden of the Gods has long been recognized for its uncommon beauty and studied as a great archaeological and geological treasure. As a foreground to majestic Pikes Peak and a backdrop to vast grasslands, Garden of the Gods houses plants and wildlife from both habitats in a remarkable mix of mountain and prairie dwellers - from bighorn sheep to prairie rattlesnakes. Close to two million visitors each year enjoy the stately monuments and plant and animal life of this National Natural Landmark. Pikes Peak, discovered in 1806 by Zebulon M. Pike, is one of the best known landmarks in the United States. It is found fourteen miles west of Colorado Springs, and its summit rises to 14,110 feet. When Katharine Lee Bates ascended Pikes Peak, the awesome view inspired her to write "America the Beautiful". Although the peak's discoverer never achieved the summit, today it can be reached by train, car, or hiking trail.
